My dad said to me when we were young, you can never get enough truth just through three hours on the Lord's Day in church, over against 165 hours in the world per week. You need to be reading, feeding your soul, doing your own private devotion son, reading the scriptures, but also reading other good books if you really want to understand a robust view of evangelical reformed faith. And to me that was overwhelmingly powerful And to my siblings. I think we're all readers till this day. Because my dad, who only had an eighth grade education, inculcated that into us.

That reading what he called good books, books that could really edify your soul, was a primary means of grace, a primary spiritual discipline in his in his mind. And I've seen that lived out in families in my church where they really inculcate good reading materials, those children usually grow up and they usually stay with the church and often are the backbone of the church in terms of people that are really firm about abiding with the truth.

Dr. Joel Beeke shares in this video that his father explained to him when he was younger that it was important to be regularly reading Scripture and godly, edifying books. It isn't enough to just attend church services once a week for a few, short hours. Now, years later, he realizes more and more just how valuable his father's wisdom was.

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) - "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."
