Unbiblical patriarchy really is where I'd go first. Unbiblical patriarchy is basically that wherein a man looks unto himself to find the answers. He's basically interpreting scripture in a undermining sense so that it would support his own selfish desires, to support himself in what he is wanting to accomplish. This man is really a despot. A patriarch is really someone who rules and who is ahead and a leader.

In an unbiblical way though that man becomes a despot. He becomes a man who is really a Lord unto himself and a king unto himself. His wishes and whims are his only desire and you will find that this unbiblical man is a man who has an injured family and he is seeking his own ways. On the converse of that though is biblical patriarchy. As we look at biblical patriarchy we want to first look to the Bible because that's what it is, it's biblical.

So we look to the Lord of the Bible, which is the Lord Jesus Christ. He was really the perfect example of patriarchy. My mind often goes to Ephesians chapter 5 and thinking about the relationship there between a husband and a wife is related to the relationship of Christ and his church. We do not see Christ dealing with his church in rough ways. It is described as something that husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church.

It speaks of him giving himself for her. So this is a man who who was not looking to fulfill his own desires but really is looking to the good of his wife and of his family. And so this man will deal with his wife and his family in a nurturing way and he will cherish them. He will be a man that that gives up his desires. His focus isn't going to be on his hobbies.

His focus is going to be first and foremost on the Lord and what the scripture says about how he should love his wife and love his family.

Trent Moody explains in this video what biblical and unbiblical patriarchy looks like. Unbiblical patriarchy is when a man is focused on what he wants to accomplish. He is a man who is a lord and king unto himself. His wishes and whims are his only desire. On the other hand, biblical patriarchy is defined by Scripture. Christ is our example. Such a man looks for the needs of his wife and his family. He gives up his own desires.

Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV) - "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her."
